Exhibitions, conferences, competitions and a guided tour of the Vigo fish market on May 28. The Student Delegation of the Faculty of Marine Sciences has organized a complete program of cultural activities until mid-June. It is the fifth edition of the Live Science program, a dissemination initiative launched by the students of the center “with the aim of showing our colleagues, especially from our own faculty, everything that can be done after completing the degree”, explains Lucía Martínez Yebra, a fourth-year student and who, together with Aurora Sobrino, a third-year student, is this year at the head of the organization. They are the most visible face of a team that also includes three other students: Víctor González, a fourth-year student; Yaiza Aguín, a third-year student and Sonia Vila, a second-year student.
Three exhibitions centered around the sea
The activities started at the end of April with the exhibition From the surface to the benthic, displayed at the main entrance of the Experimental Sciences building and which this Friday will be replaced by another dedicated to the world of sediments and stratigraphy. “The first exhibition is aimed at allowing interested people to see the different organisms that can be found in the sea”, points out Martínez Yebra, who also explains that there is a part of the exhibition dedicated to the rocky area, another to the water column with a sandy or muddy bottom and, another part, to great depths. “The idea is that they can see the differences between them and not just learn their characteristics in class”, explains the coordinator of the activities.
The second exhibition, entitled Stratigraphy, will show the variations depending on the area in question, “and, with it, we want students to be a little more interested in the world of sediment”, explain the organization, to which they add that it can be visited from the 11th to the 25th of this month. The third will be entitled Oceanographic Ships and will last until mid-June. For this, they have the help of members of the Spanish Navy from the Vigo command who have some replicas of ships and fishing boats that have been built over the years and who, kindly, will lend them to them. “Our career has multiple boat trips, so what better than to know where you can get to work and learn to improve the different types of instruments that are used, in fact there are several projects to improve the fishing sector and we want to make them known”, explains the coordinator.
Marine mammals star in the first conference this Thursday
In addition to the exhibitions, the Live Science 2018 program also includes two conferences. The first will be tomorrow, Thursday, and will be entitled Marine Mammals of the World and the Challenges for Their Conservation and will be given by Carmen M. Arija, a zoologist specializing in marine mammals and carnivores and founder-director of Sea Wolves, a zoological training and research center dedicated to education and biological outreach. The event will be held in the graduation hall at 1:00 p.m. The next one will be on Thursday, the 24th, and will focus on the world of marine hydrography.
Photography and drawing competitions
Ademais das exposicións e conferencias o curso pasado o equipo de organización de Live Science, do que Lucía Martínez xa formaba parte como colaboradora, decidiu incluír no programa un concurso de fotografía de temática mariña e, “como a cousa saíu bastante ben”, este ano decidiron non só repetir esta experiencia, senón ampliala cun concurso de debuxo “que agardamos esperte tanto ou máis interese que o de fotografía”. O prazo de presentación de traballos manterase aberto do 15 ao 30 de maio e, en ambos casos, haberá premios para os tres primeiros clasificados. No caso do premio de fotografía o primeiro recibirá unha tableta; o segundo, unha mochila de transporte de material fotográfico e, o terceiro, unha tarxeta de memoria de 16 Gb. No concurso de debuxo as persoas que gañen recibirán cadansúa caixa Faber Castell valorada en 100, 75 e 25 euros, respectivamente.
