On May 24, Alba Aguión, a doctoral student at Campus do Mar and member of Future Ocean Labs at the University of Vigo, presented, as part of the “Café con Sal” lecture series, the talk “Implications of observed climate change distributional impacts on commercial marine species.”
The role of climate change in the distributional shifts of marine species is widely recognized. However, despite substantial evidence on the response of marine life to climate change, few studies to date have addressed the implications of these changes for fisheries and the communities that depend on them. Alba’s work is part of the CLOCK project (Climate Adaptation to Shifting Stocks), led by Elena Ojea at the University of Vigo in collaboration with the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), and funded by a European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant) fellowship. CLOCK aims to identify and understand the new challenges in marine ecosystems caused by climate change and to find solutions for effectively adapting fisheries management.
During the presentation, Alba discussed how climate change is causing shifts in the distribution of commercial marine species, explaining which countries and fisheries are most affected.
