“I lived in Spain, between 2008 and 2013, before coming to Australia, where I currently work, and I have always wanted to return. Vigo is one of the centers in Spain with the best possibilities to work in marine sciences. In addition, the program to attract excellent research talent at the University of Vigo seems very interesting to me to develop as an independent researcher and follow my path”, explains Marino, from the Research School of Earth Sciences of the Australian National University, which he joined five years ago. Paleoceanography and paleoclimatology are the areas in which the work of this graduate in Earth Sciences focuses, dedicated to understanding the evolution of the oceans and the Earth’s climate on geological time scales. “To do this, I analyze marine sediment samples with geochemical methods that allow me to reconstruct the changes in temperature, salinity and chemical composition of the Earth’s main oceans over the last million years,” explains Marino, who recalls that the ocean covers approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface, hence its importance in regulating the climate and also that of paleoceanographic reconstructions, which help to understand the evolution of the Earth’s climate, beyond the coverage of instrumental records.
A researcher “with an excellent track record and a lot of potential”
In addition to an “excellent” curriculum, which also received an excellent rating in the external evaluation carried out”, the Vice-Rector for Research and Transfer of the University of Vigo, Asunción Longo, highlights that Ginaluca Marino “is a young researcher, with a very interesting track record, with publications of the highest level, a career developed in leading centers in the United States, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy and a large network of contacts and collaborations. In addition, he presents a line of work that fits very well with the strategic lines of the University, specifically within the scope of Campus do Mar”.
Longo also highlights the multidisciplinary approach of the work carried out by Gianluca Marino, focused on the development and application of state-of-the-art micropaleontological, geochemical and statistical techniques for climate change and ocean research. “We believe that he is a researcher with an excellent track record and great potential and he seems very excited about joining the University of Vigo, taking a special interest in the Campus do Mar specialization project,” explains the head of Research and Transfer.
Climate variability in the North Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean, the study
Currently, in Canberra, Marino is working on obtaining the first geochemical records to reconstruct climate changes in the equatorial Indian Ocean area. Once he arrives in Vigo, he says that “my idea is to integrate my interest in climate changes on a global scale with issues more relevant to the climate of Spain and Galicia, for example, focusing on the climate variability of the North Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean”.
Regarding what he believes he can contribute to the University of Vigo, Marino points out that some of the research topics he is working on and some of the geochemical methods he uses are not yet implemented at this academic institution. “For example, much of my work focuses on climate sensitivity, which studies the change in surface temperature on Earth in response to a change in the concentration of greenhouse gases and other agents that affect the climate. This topic is very important for predicting future temperature changes,” he explains.
