New Approaches to Cryopreservation: Ultra-Rapid Warming

On April 12 at 11:00 a.m., Fritz Kleinhans, Associate Professor of Physics Emeritus at Indiana University–Purdue University, USA, inaugurated the 8th edition of the “Café con Sal” program with the lecture “New Approaches to Cryopreservation: Ultra Rapid Warming.”

Fritz’s work is a collaborative effort with several biologists and cryobiologists. His specialization lies in membrane biophysics and ultra-rapid laser warming of cryogenic specimens, with recent studies on various species, including coral larvae, zebrafish embryos, and other marine species of aquaculture interest. This research has been funded by the NIH, NSF, USDA, Smithsonian, and the Cawthron Institute, among others, and has produced more than 50 publications to date.

During the lecture, Dr. Kleinhans presented a revolutionary technique that makes it possible to rewarm previously cryopreserved embryos using laser-generated heat. The team, almost unique in the world, is currently available at the ECIMAT facilities.
