Next Monday, October 9, Roger Butlin, Professor of Evolutionary Biology at the University of Sheffield and guest professor at the University of Gothenburg, will present, in a new session of the “Café con Sal” conference cycle, the conference entitled “Adaptation and speciation in Littorina”.
Roger Butlin has focused his career on the study of the genetic basis and the evolution of barriers to gene flow during the speciation process. Although he has worked with a wide range of organisms, especially grasshoppers, his current BARRIERS project, funded by an ERC Advanced Grant (European Research Council), focuses on the study of the speciation process in the sea snail Littorina saxatilis. BARRIERS is carrying out a significant part of the field and experimental work at the EMBRC (European Marine Biological Resource Centre) facilities in Vigo (ECIMAT; EMBRC-Spain) and Roscoff (Station Biologique Roscoff; EMBRC-France). At ECIMAT, his group collaborates with Emilio Rolán and Juan Galindo from the Population Genetics and Cytogenetics research group, with the aim of studying the genetic basis of divergence and the degree of reproductive isolation in the hybrid zone of L. saxatilis on the Galician coasts and these results will be compared with a similar hybrid zone in Sweden.
During his lecture, Roger Butlin will describe the analyses he is carrying out in the hybrid zone between divergent ecotypes of L. saxatilis and will discuss how cline analysis can help determine the genetic architecture of loci influenced by natural selection, which is fundamental in the evolution of reproductive isolation.
