9th of October Roger Butlin will present at the UVIGO´s faculty of Marine Sciences the conference titled “Adaptation and speciation in Littorina”

Monday 9th of October, Roger Butlin, Professor of Evolutionary Biology at the University of Sheffield and Guest Professor of the University of Gothenburg, will present, in a new session of the cycle of conferences “Café con Sal”, the conference titled “Adaptation and speciation in Littorina”.

Roger Butlin has focused his career on the genetic basis and evolution of barriers to gene flow during the process of speciation. Although in the past he has worked with a wide range of organisms, especially grasshoppers, his current project, BARRIERS, funded by an ERC Advanced Grant (European Research Council), focuses in the study of speciation in the marine snail Littorina saxatilis. Project BARRIERS will rely on EMBRC (European Marine Biological Resource Centre) facilities in Vigo (ECIMAT; EMBRC-Spain) and Roscoff (Station Biologique Roscoff; EMBRC-France) for an important part of its field and experimental work. The work developed in Vigo, in collaboration with the researchers Emilio Rolan and Juan Galindo from UVigo Populations Genetics Team, will compare the genetics of divergence and the extent of reproductive isolation in L. saxatilis contact zones from Galician shores (Spain) with similar contact zones studied in Sweden.

During his conference, Professor Butlin will describe ongoing analyses of contact zones between divergent ecotypes of L. saxatilis, discussing how cline analysis can reveal the arrangement of loci under selection, which is important for the evolution of further reproductive isolation.

The conference will take place at the conference room of UVIGO´s faculty of Marine Sciences at 11:00h (CEST) and will be live streamed on http://tv.uvigo.es/es/directo/1.html and permanently available on our websites and social media afterwards.
