The installation of the institutional headquarters of the Campus do Mar in the Faraday building of the Escuela de Transmisones y Electricidad de la Armada, ETEA, in the Teis district of Vigo, is a little closer to becoming a reality after the signing this afternoon, between the University of Vigo and the Ministries of Finance and Culture, Education and University Education, of two agreements for the financing of the work prior to the rehabilitation of the Faraday building. 243,000 euros is the amount that the Xunta de Galicia will allocate this year to the beginning of the rehabilitation of the building, which includes the sectoral project, the geotechnical study, structural analysis, planimetry survey and drafting of the basic execution project, as well as the drafting of the technical specifications for the rehabilitation of the building. As “a historic day that represents a great leap in the future of the University”, the rector of the Vigo academic institution, Salustiano Mato, described this day, in which the ministers of Education, Román Rodríguez and Finance, Valeriano Martínez, in the presence of the president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, signed the agreement to begin the rehabilitation of the Faraday building. “This 2017, ETEA is issuing again”, said Feijóo, who acknowledged that the institutions have not been able to live up to a project that has suffered a paralysis of ten years. The president of the Xunta also advanced the upcoming signing of the agreement that will allow plots 3A and 3B to revert to the Vigo Free Zone, where in addition to the corporate headquarters of Campus do Mar, the business accelerator, the gastronomic innovation center and activities related to advanced marine technologies will be located. Along with these actions to which the Xunta plans to allocate around five million euros, Feijóo announced an imminent agreement with the CSIC to transfer the Bouzas Marine Research Institute to the ETEA.
The best showcase for marine science
After signing each agreement with the Ministries of Education and Finance, the rector of the University of Vigo highlighted that beyond the importance of the creation of Campus do Mar for the University, its installation at ETEA “means revitalizing an area of the city and creating a place where Vigo and Galicia will look at each other in the world”. Mato recalled the difficulties involved in unblocking a project that had been paralyzed for a decade and especially thanked the work of the president of the Xunta for being “a person of his word who fulfilled his commitment to the University and to Vigo”. The rector predicted that after a year, when the first results of Campus do Mar begin to arrive, “there will be no better showcase for marine sciences, for seafood, for industry and commerce”.
For his part, the President of the Xunta also emphasized the idea that Campus do Mar is called to be a reference for marine research and recalled the abandonment that ETEA suffered for years, in which it did not have the use it deserved. “In 2017, ETEA will issue again”, stated Feijóo, who assured that after solving some very complicated files “the project has no turning back”. After assuring that in a project like this there is no point in short-termism, he advanced that “in this legislature we want to give these facilities to the University and to the residents of Teis what they need, linking the past with the present by projecting it into the future”.
