On Thursday, June 1, Elena Ojea, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Vigo and head of the “Future Oceans Lab” group, will present the conference “Climate Adaptation to Shifting stocks” within the Café con Sal scientific conference series. The conference will take place in the ECIMAT auditorium at 11:00 a.m.
Among the impacts of climate change on the marine environment, changes in species distribution are particularly relevant for the future of their management. Given a scenario of change, spatial management structures such as marine protected areas or territorial fishing rights could no longer be efficient in the long term. This talk explores this issue in depth through an analysis of the optimal location of marine reserves on the California coast, and how this may be affected by climate change.
The talk is part of the “CLOCK: climate Adaptation to shifting stocks” Project, an ERC Starting Grant that was developed in the Future Oceans Lab group of the University of Vigo and whose main objective is to demonstrate, through case studies, the implications of the redistribution of species for their fisheries management.
During the talk, Elena Ojea will present the general framework of the CLOCK Project and the specific exercise she developed as preliminary work with the University of Santa Barbara, applied to a special network of marine reserves in the Channel Islands region.
