Conference “Effect of combined physical stressors on early development stages of Fucus serratus”, March 16 at ECIMAT

On Thursday, March 16 at 11am, in the ECIMAT auditorium, a new session of the Café con Sal Conference Series will take place. On this occasion, it will be Óscar Álvarez, research technician at the Universidad Rey Don Juan Carlos (URJC), who will present part of his research work carried out in collaboration with Celia Olabarría (Coastal Ecology group) with the talk entitled “Effect of combined physical stressors on early development stages of one contracting target seaweed species, Fucus serratus“.

Species of the genus Fucus, including Fucus Serratus, are known as “founding species of intertidal communities”, as they provide food and shelter for other species of algae, invertebrates and fish. According to previous studies, this species is in decline in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula, due to ocean warming and periods of stress at low tide. The early stages in the life cycle of F. Serratus are very important for the persistence of the species, since during these periods they are more susceptible to stress conditions. During this conference, Óscar Álvarez will present the main ecophysiological responses of F. Serratus from the Atlantic and Cantabrian areas of the Galician coast at different stages of its life cycle. The analysis of these responses could help to better understand the factors that limit the survival of the species..

Óscar’s research work, led by Rosa María Viejo García and Brezo Martínez Díaz-Caneja (URJC), is part of the project “Factors determining contractions and expansions in the distribution of coastal founder species: Improving predictions in climate change scenarios”, which aims to determine the physical and biological factors that influence the distribution limits of shrinking native species and expanding invasives in order to improve predictions about the distribution of these species in the face of change climatic

The conference will be broadcast live from the UvigoTV channel http://tv.uvigo.es/es/directo/1.html and later published on our websites and social networks (ECIMAT – Café con Sal, CampusdoMarTV and UvigoTV).
