Founded in 1872, the Estación Zooloxica Anton Dohnr is one of the oldest and most recognized Marine Research Institutions in the field of marine biology and ecology. The research and conservation program for sea turtles, species threatened by the increasing degradation of marine ecosystems, overfishing, or climate change, was started in 1983 with the objective of providing a scientific basis for the development of effective management programs and strategies for these emblematic animals.
The researcher Fulvio Maffuci has been working at this institution since 2002 with the aim of understanding the distribution of the loggerhead turtle on the west coast of the Mediterranean and the connectivity between its stocks, the main aspects related to the biology and ecology of this species, and the factors that threaten it. On March 2, Fulvio presented the new Sea Turtle Research Center of this station and the possible effects of climate change on the expansion of the nesting areas of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) on the west coast of the Mediterranean Sea with the conference titled “The Marine turtle research center: a new facility of SZN”.
