On Thursday, March 2, Fulvio Mafucci, researcher at the “Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn” in Naples, will present, in a new session of the Café con Sal Conference Series, the new Marine Turtle Research Center of this station and the possible effects of climate change on the expansion of the nesting areas of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) on the west coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The conference, entitled “The Marine turtle research center: a new facility of SZN”, will take place in the ECIMAT auditorium at 11 a.m.
Founded in 1872, the Anton Dohnr Zoological Station is one of the oldest and most recognized Marine Research Institutions in the field of marine biology and ecology. The research and conservation program for sea turtles, species threatened by the increasing degradation of marine ecosystems, overfishing and climate change, was initiated in 1983 with the aim of providing a scientific basis for the development of effective management programs and strategies for these emblematic animals. Researcher Fulvio Maffuci has been working at this institution since 2002 with the aim of understanding the distribution of the loggerhead turtle on the western coast of the Mediterranean and the connectivity between its stocks, the main aspects related to the biology and ecology of this species and the factors that threaten it. During this conference, Fulvio will present the New Research Center, focusing on his work in recent years.
