Last Thursday, February 2, the ceremony of awarding the accreditations to the five unique research centers of Galicia (Citic, Ciqus, Cimus, Cinbio and Ecimat) and the two consolidated strategic groups (Citius and AtlanTIC) took place in Santiago de Compostela. The seven centers distinguished at the event, which generated a value of around 28 million euros in the 2013-2015 triennium, have guaranteed stable funding until 2019: more than 13 million euros that will benefit the more than 700 researchers that make up them. “With this investment we seek to project the work of these seven centers towards the international arena”, indicated the president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who also recalled that we are the fifth autonomous community with the greatest scientific production.
Feijóo placed special emphasis on the multiplier potential of scientific research and the importance of transferring knowledge to the social fabric. “To launch this multiplier effect, investment is needed, which is why since 2009 the Xunta has invested 400 million euros in R&D&I activity in universities”, he explained. Furthermore, Galicia was one of the few communities that maintained economic support for the training of human resources and research groups, in addition to opening a line of support for unique centers and strategic groups. In the new University Financing Plan, valid until 2020, the research promotion fund is the one with the greatest growth forecast and this year it has already absorbed 52 million euros.
