Shellfish poisonings caused by biotoxins of marine origin are widely known in Galicia. However, fish poisonings are practically unknown. The researcher from the Vigo Oceanographic Center (IEO-Vigo), Santiago Fraga, PhD from the University of Vigo, has extensive experience in the study and monitoring of toxic phytoplankton blooms and has been conducting research on this type of food poisoning over the past decade.
On February 16, Santiago Fraga presented the conference titled “Ciguatera Fish Poisoning: a new food safety problem in Spain.” During this conference, Santiago described the origin and causes of ciguatera, a type of food poisoning caused by fish that is relatively new in Spain. The work presented is part of the CICAN project: Adaptive strategies of harmful microalgae: An innovative approach applied to the study of ciguatera in the Canary Islands in the context of climate change.
