Next Thursday, February 16 at 11:00 am, we will have as speaker of our “Coffee with Salt” conference series Santiago Fraga, doctor at the University of Vigo and researcher at the Vigo Oceanographic Center (IEO-Vigo) since 1977. The speaker, who has an extensive career in the study and monitoring of toxic phytoplankton blooms, will present part of his work carried out in the last decade focused on food poisoning with the conference entitled “Ciguatera Fish Poisoning: a new food safety problem in Spain“.
Mollusc poisonings caused by biotoxins of marine origin are widely known in Galicia. However, fish poisonings are practically unknown. During this conference, Santiago Fraga will present a type of food poisoning caused by fish, relatively new in Spain, describing the disease and its causes. This work is part of the CICAN project: Adaptive strategies of harmful microalgae: An innovative approach applied to the study of ciguatera in the Canary Islands in the context of climate change, of which you can obtain more information at the following link: http://proyectocican.es/el-proyecto/.
