Inauguration of the VII Edition of the Café con Sal program: “Documental Mareas Vermellas”

On Thursday, January 19, the VII edition of the scientific conference series “Café con Sal” began, consisting of a total of 14 presentations distributed throughout the year 2017.

The opening of the VII edition was led by Francisco Rodríguez, researcher at the Vigo Oceanographic Institute, who presented the documentary “Mareas vermellas,” directed by Manuel E. García Branco (IIM-CSIC) and Jorge Hernández Urcera (IEO). This documentary shows the relationship between oceanographic conditions and the phytoplankton dynamics responsible for the presence of biotoxins in the rías, as well as the role of the scientific community in researching reliable detection systems and comprehensive analysis methods that enable the prevention or early detection of these toxic episodes. In the documentary, the authors describe this complex oceanographic phenomenon, which is increasingly relevant due to climate change, highlighting the research potential that exists in Galicia on this topic.
