“Sex changes on the beach: endocrine disruption in gastropods”, June 15 at ECIMAT

Next Wednesday, June 15 at 11:00 am, in the ECIMAT auditorium, we have a new session of the 6th edition of the Café con Sal Program. Filipe Laranjeiro, a doctoral student at the University of Aveiro and the University of Vigo, will present part of the results of his doctoral thesis with the talk entitled “Sex changes on the beach: endocrine disruption in gastropods“.

Filipe Laranjeiro’s doctoral thesis, co-directed by Ricardo Beiras, focused on the study and monitoring of the toxic effects caused by organotin compounds (TBT and TPT), compounds commonly used until their prohibition in anti-fouling paint formulations applied to ships. These compounds are responsible for the endocrine disruption phenomenon – imposex – which is characterized by the development of male sexual characteristics in female gastropods, causing in cases of high contamination the sterility of the females and the consequent disappearance of the populations.

During this conference Filipe Laranjeiro will briefly present the current levels of imposex on the coast of Portugal and its evolution over recent years, as well as the results of a bioassay with sediment from the port of Vigo.

For more information about this conference you can read the blog or the ECIMAT website.
