Next Friday, March 4 at 11:00 a.m., in the ECIMAT auditorium, the 6th edition of the Café con Sal Program continues. On this occasion, it will be Raquel Fernández, a researcher at the University of Vigo, who will present part of the results of her doctoral thesis with the talk entitled “Use of the color of the digestive gland of octopus paralarvae as an indicator of the beginning of exogenous feeding“.
The feeding of paralarvae of the octopus Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 in their first days of life is a critical factor. The development of culture techniques that ensure the survival of the larvae during this period is fundamental and requires a deep knowledge of the mechanisms of nutrition and their relationship with the development of the digestive system and metabolism of this species. In this talk Raquel Fernández will present the results on the use of the color of the digestive gland as an indicator of exogenous feeding during this critical life phase, in order to provide knowledge for the cultivation of one of the most important commercial species in Galicia: the octopus.
This study is part of the OCTOWELF project: “Well-being and health in the early life stages of the common octopus: Effect of nutrition and environmental factors”, in which several institutions participate such as the IEO of Vigo and the Canary Islands, the Universities of Vigo, Granada and La Laguna; and the CSIC of Vigo. The work was carried out in collaboration between the Department of Ecology and Animal Biology of the University of Vigo and the Marine Research Institute Havforskningsinstituttet of Norway, where Raquel Fernández carried out several stays thanks to the CephsinAction Association.
