Next Wednesday, February 3 at 11:00 am, in the ECIMAT auditorium, the 6th edition of the Café con Sal Program continues. On this occasion, Noé Ferreira, researcher at the University of Vigo, will present his work on the invasive ecology of the Asian clam Corbicula fluminea (O.F. Müller, 1774).
Corbicula fluminea is a bivalve listed as one of the 100 most harmful invasive species worldwide. Associated with human activities since the beginning of the 20th century, it has managed to expand its distribution area, and can currently be found in most waterways in temperate regions.
From an ecological point of view, the talk will address aspects related to the species’ own biology and its tolerance to different environmental factors, the impact it has on native naiad populations and its role as a food source for higher organisms in the food chain. This last point is key in the invasion process, but could also offer some possibilities when addressing its biological control.
