ECIMAT launches YouTube channel with a video on cryopreservation of marine microalgae

ECIMAT debuts its YouTube channel presenting this video, a detailed, step-by-step protocol on the cryopreservation of marine microalgae.

Cryopreservation is a tool that is being successfully applied for the conservation of marine microalgae cultures. Cryopreservation allows the storage of cells or tissues for long periods of time at cryogenic temperatures (-196ºC), maintaining a state of “suspended animation” in which all biological activities and metabolic reactions are suspended.

Among the advantages of this technique for the maintenance of microalgal collections are: less time consumption by specialized personnel, lower economic cost, intact and functional preservation of the strains and less storage space. All these advantages would allow an increase in the species that any laboratory can have at its disposal and allows maintaining the original characteristics of the isolated strains, without the risk of subjecting them to selective pressure by multiple receptions.

Cryopreservation of microalgae strains within the reach of all laboratories/companies could mean a great saving of time and resources and open up many perspectives for marine biotechnology. The good results obtained with many species are encouraging to continue research in this line and to define more and more cryopreservation protocols for different species of marine microalgae.
