Five years ago, ECIMAT joined the European Marine Stations Network (MARS), and year after year it has gained increasing prominence within the network. This growing role was reflected in 2014 when ECIMAT participated in a European consortium applying for funding under the H2020 Research Infrastructures program.
This prominence has been further confirmed with the recent appointment of ECIMAT’s Director, Jesús Souza Troncoso, as a member of the network’s Executive Committee.
MARS was founded nearly two decades ago with the aim of creating a network of marine stations across Europe that could contribute to defining research strategies, providing a counterbalance to the increasing fragmentation of the marine science community and the growing competitive challenges faced by marine stations in securing resources.
Today, MARS is a platform for cooperation among directors and operators of marine research stations. It has contributed to the development of a successful marine research policy, resulting in the funding of several international programs and projects, and has facilitated significant advances in marine science.
