Cryopreservation Enables the First Successful Freezing of Sea Urchin Embryos with High Survival Rates

Estefanía Paredes conducted her work between the laboratories of the Faculty of Marine Sciences and the Toralla Marine Science Station (ECIMAT), achieving for the first time the successful freezing of early-stage sea urchin embryos with high survival prospects. Since 2008, the Coastal Ecology Laboratory of the University has been developing methodologies to cryopreserve embryos and larvae of four marine invertebrate species: sea urchins, oysters, and two types of mussels. Within this research line, Estefanía Paredes completed her doctoral thesis, which focused specifically on the cryopreservation of early developmental stages of marine invertebrates, under the supervision of Juan Bellas and the mentorship of Ricardo Beiras.
