Workshop on Fish Stock Delimitation (DelFishStock)

On Thursday and Friday, September 25–26, ECIMAT hosted the DelFishStock Workshop on fish stock delimitation. Researchers and professionals from various European organizations—including the European Commission JRC-Ispra, FAO, University of Southampton, University of Lisbon, CSIC-IIM, and IEO—presented the main methods and criteria from disciplines involved in defining and delimiting stocks: marine biology, ecology, genetics, parasitology, geochemistry, oceanography, georeferencing and tracking systems (GIS-Tag), management, policy, and more.

After two days of lectures and discussions, the scientific committee concluded that the prior definition of metapopulation structure is key for building fish stock management models. The researchers emphasized that using a single tool is insufficient for identifying these structures due to the high complexity of stock delimitation. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary, in which the available tools complement each other to allow delimitation at the highest possible resolution.

The high quality of the speakers and the excellent organization resulted in a very successful workshop, where the necessary connections were established to advance fish stock delimitation through a multidisciplinary approach.
