The book opens with a curiosity: the origin of the term ría, coined by Von Richthofen in 1886. From there, the first chapter explains the factors that determine the existence and formation of rías, how sediment studies help understand their evolution, the differences with other geographic features such as fjords, and the impact of human activity on the rías.
The second chapter focuses on their functioning, helping students understand where and how water enters the rías, the differences between upper and lower rías, periods of higher fertility, productivity levels, and more.
The third chapter examines the role of humans, specifically the occupation of areas surrounding the rías, which are densely populated. This section covers the historical evolution of these populations, the unique characteristics of the terrain, demographics, the most representative economic activities—such as shipbuilding, shellfishing, tourism, and fishing—and provides guidance and lessons learned for better future management of ría territories.
The fourth chapter continues in this area, delving into the main economic activities of the rías. It begins with the role of ports as economic engines in Galicia, the specialization of the five general-interest ports, maritime transport, the future of port traffic, its evolution over the past 20 years, and the effects of economic globalization on the Galician port system.
The fifth chapter analyzes pollution and its effects on the rías. It explains the main contaminants during different historical periods, the pathways through which these substances enter the sea, and growing concerns about bioaccumulation in living organisms. This chapter also covers methods for measuring and analyzing pollution and explains why mussels are considered a global indicator species of contamination.
Finally, the book concludes with a chapter on the role of technology in the intelligent management of the rías, enabling the collection of data on species evolution, weather, water quality, catches, maritime safety, and more. It explains the functioning of data collection systems such as remote sensing, buoy networks, radars, and data management processes.
The book about the rías is available for download in PDF and as an e-book in Galician, while the Campus do Mar is currently working on Spanish and Portuguese versions. Based on the discussions from last week’s Global Change course held in Viana do Castelo, work will begin on producing a similar publication, which is expected to be released later this year.
