Ricardo Beiras, Director of the Marine Science Station of Toralla (ECIMAT), opened the session and encouraged the attendees to continue working together, as research and innovation represent the main paths to overcome the delicate economic situation we are experiencing.
Gidon Minkoff, from Teleostei Hatchery Consulting, delved into the zootechnics, current situation, and challenges of cod and hake farming.
Xose Benito Peleteiro (Aquaculture Area, Oceanographic Center of Vigo, IEO) presented novel results on the farming of wreckfish, positioning it as a species with great potential for Galician aquaculture.
Finally, it was Bernardo Fernández’s turn, professor and researcher at the Galician Institute for Aquaculture Training (IGaFA), who spoke to us about the farming of megrim, a species that has suitable qualities for aquaculture production but is not currently being farmed.
Valentín Trujillo Gorbea, Director of the Oceanographic Center of Vigo, IEO (Spanish Institute of Oceanography), closed the session by highlighting the importance of this type of scientific outreach events to connect with society, an aspect that is often not given as much attention as it should be.
