The Marine Coast of Toralla: Frontier in Evolution

Activity Summary:
In the Year of Darwin, we aim to hold a series of activities that connect this commemoration with the understanding of the marine environment. For this purpose, we have chosen the marine coast as a place of passage for countless species—some that evolved by leaving the sea to colonize terrestrial habitats, and others that returned to the sea. It is a space where animals and plants have had to adapt to survive in such a harsh environment, facing rising and falling tides, wave action, desiccation and sun exposure, and the cold of winter during low tide…
The objectives we have set are as follows:
Bring students from Vigo schools closer to the knowledge of the marine environment through a tour of the intertidal zone. Communicate the importance of the coastline in the evolution of marine and terrestrial species, as well as the adaptation of current species to the coastal environment.
The scheduled activities will take place from November 13 to 20 (excluding the weekend) at the ECIMAT facilities on Toralla Island, in the 10 to 14 h time slot.
Due to the program content and the capacity of our facilities, we have decided that participating students should be between 10 and 17 years old, with a maximum group size of 40 students.

The workshops consist of the following activities:
- Educational visits to the Toralla surroundings, low-tide rocks, and low-tide beach.
- Educational visits focused primarily on the adaptations of species living in the coastal environment.
- Marine Workshop: Where students will observe samples collected from the coast and participate in activities related to the adaptations of marine species.
- Exhibition “The Toralla Coast, Frontier in Evolution”, featuring aquariums where adaptations to the environment are highlighted: adaptations to wave action, desiccation, animals and algae living in tide pools, and animals that visit the coast at high tide… The exhibition consists of aquariums and explanatory panels illustrating the role of the coastline in the evolution of marine and terrestrial species.
