The researcher, Marta Miñambres, from the Marine Genetic Resources Group at the University of Vigo, part of the Strategic Oceanography Group – ECIMAT, received the award for the best student poster during the Aquaculture Europe 2009 (AE2009) conference in Trondheim, Norway, for her work “Early Selection of Growth Ratios in Mytilus galloprovincialis in Long-Line Cultures.”
This is a pioneering study on the development of mussels cultivated on long-lines, establishing the growth dynamics in new submerged bag systems in offshore waters. The award considered the challenges of conducting the study under the adverse conditions of the Alboran Sea.
The main aim of this study is to determine whether early selection of mussels can be used to rear the fastest-growing individuals in nurseries, and subsequently, following the best-growth criterion, to optimize the productivity of raft-based mussel farming.
